About Springs

There are many interpretations of the word "spring," such as: spring water, a clear, fresh drink; Desert Springs, a beautiful area in California; or spring, the season that signals new hope in the breaking of the winter doldrums. We could go on and on, but, to us, the word's most important and interesting meaning is this: a device used to store energy, so that when the energy is needed, it is released.

History states that the first uses of springs go back to the 15th century, but it was not until the 18th century that springs were mass produced. Today, mechanical springs are hidden away “behind the scenes” in many of the products we use in our daily lives. Even though we don’t always see them, springs are there, in lawn mowers, farm equipment, golf carts, electrical circuit breakers and many other applications. Springs are used in most products to cause or prevent motion, and the most common types of springs are compression, extension and torsion.
